Design and Implementation of a Student Centred Learning Environment

چکیده
Online learning systems are complex environments. Environments such as WebCT [31] and Blackboard [6] provide elegant interfaces to a suite of tools that assist in the creation of an online classroom. Teaching institutions are using technologies of this sort to produce flexible learning environments. There are a number of infrastructures which facilitate interaction between the users of these virtual classrooms; however, there are none known to the author that provide meaningful feedback with reference to learning outcomes. Typical, learning environments are modelled on the interactions of users [33], not the users achievements and learning outcomes. WebCT+ is a project at the University of Wollongong, which ultimately aims to develop a complete learning environment. The project is actively being developed on the Macintosh OS X [1] platform using a number of open source technologies. The learning environment is based entirely on students and their interactions with the system. The environment provides valuable feedback to a student in the subjects that they are enrolled in by expressing achievement of learning outcomes through assessment. It is anticipated that this outcomes based feedback could be usefully deployed for reflective learning activities. This paper describes the rationale behind WebCT+ as a student centred learning environment. It also details the architecture and technologies used to develop the project whilst being mindful of its future directions. It should be noted that WebCT+ has no association with the commercial product known as WebCT.

This paper presents a quantitative approach to multimodal discourse analysis for analyzing online collaborative learning. The coding framework draws together the fields of systemic functional linguistics and Activity Theory to analyze interactions between collaborative-, contentand technology-related discourse. The approach is used to examine how the task subject matter, the activity design, an...
متن کاملStudent–centred Learning: What Does It Mean for Students and Lecturers?
The term student–centred learning (SCL) is widely used in the teaching and learning literature. Many terms have been linked with student–centred learning, such as flexible learning (Taylor 2000), experiential learning (Burnard 1999), self-directed learning and therefore the slightly overused term ‘student–centred learning’ can mean different things to different people. In addition, in practice ...
متن کاملExperiences of Advanced High School Students in Synchronous Online Recitations
The question of how to best design an online course that promotes student-centred learning is an area of on-going research. This mixed-methods study focused on a section of advanced high school students, in college-level mathematics courses, that used a synchronous online environment mediated over web-conferencing software, and whether the affordance of multiple communication channels and stude...
متن کاملOnline student centred discussion: Creating a collaborative learning environment
Many universities both in Australia and overseas are increasingly transferring courses and programs at both graduate and undergraduate level into fully interactive online environments. Online learning and teaching requires different and complimentary skill sets on the part of university teachers. Very little has been documented thus far in regard to training university academics to teach effect...
متن کاملDesigning an IT-augmented student-centred learning environment
This paper explores the nature of the relationship between IT and a student-centred quality-teaching environment. It argues that given the need to graduate students with knowledge, skills and capabilities for the extent of change required in a knowledge economy, universities must give more attention to the development of student-centred teaching opportunities in which students learn from experi...
